All chemical substances in Canada and the US are registered with a unique Chemical Abstract Services number. The sequence is typically three (3) parts, separated by hyphens (example: water is 7732-18-5).

All vendor ingredients contain 1 or more chemical substances which are listed on the Safety Data Sheet under Composition Information. Not all chemical substances shown on the Safety Data Sheet may be listed on the vendor ingredient INCI list because functional ingredients used in the manufacturing of vendor ingredients may be omitted from the final INCI list of your formulated product. 

Chemical Abstract Data is provided for formulators to evaluate the impact of the ingredients used during formulation. You can download the CAS Data Reference Guide below. We recommend using this tool to assist in selecting vendor ingredients and refining your formulations.

Many cosmetic ingredients are classified as UVCB, which stands for Unknown or Variable composition, Complex reaction products, or Biological materials. This is a regulatory term used in chemistry and environmental safety to describe substances that cannot be fully defined by a simple chemical structure or single molecular formula. UVCB ingredients may lack of information such as Molecular Weight, Melting Point, Boiling Point, Flash Point, or Refractive Index.
